Abstract

The significance of plasmatic hemostatic (1) and fibrinolytic (2) factors in atherothrombogenesis leading to coronary heart disease is well-established. These plasmatic factors can be modified by diet, exercise, smoking cessation, or drugs within weeks. The association of triglycerides with elevated fVIIc and fibrinogen in the fasting state (3) suggests that an acute increase in triglycerides by a fatty meal (4) might influence the activity or concentration of these hemostatic factors. Postprandial lipoproteins have been shown to worsen haemorrheology (5) and have been related more closely than fasting lipoproteins to the occurrence of coronary heart disease (4). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether acute alterations of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins by a meal with more than 90% of calories derived from fat will influence fVIIc, fVc, and ATIII and whether these changes are correlated to the extent of postprandial lipemia. Those individuals who develop a hypercoagulable state after a fatty meal shall be identified. To address the question of whether elevated fVIIc will further increase, two study groups were investigated: one group with combined hyperlipemia (high fVIIc activity) and one normolipemic group (normal fVIIc activity). Fibrinogen (6) was not selected for this study because the long half-life (5 days) would make changes within 10 hours difficult to detect.
